Adam Lambert, Allison Iraheta tops, Danny Gokey hokey::'American Idol' fashion

American Idol's fashion contest was rocked by Adam Lambert and Allison Iraheta last night, with Kris Allen dressing better than he sang but Danny Gokey making us want to cover our eyes.

Picture Elvis Presley in his thin days, maybe wearing the famous white ensemble, in that sing-your-guts-out pose, the sneer, the curled lip on his handsome face, and then hit the time machine button – oh say, like a half-century ahead and what do you got?

Adam Lambert. The popped collar of his studded jacket (eeks, was Kara wearing the same one?), the almost bare chest with chunky medallions, the graphic bell bottoms, the Elvis black hair hit with a razor – eerily similar, a modern day clone.

Sure, he did the guyliner and nail thing, but take note . . . he’s toned it down just a bit, because someone is whispering in his very good ear, “people think you’re gorgeous.” Props to the stylists for subtle silhouette that conjured the King and a big nod to the contestant who definitely earned a whole lotta love from his fans last night.

Since we mentioned the razor cut, let’s go to Allison Iraheta’s new ‘do, especially since Adam took her to his hairdresser. The choppy locks were such an improvement over her heavy red coif, and the new burgundy shade, entirely hip. Allison looked (and sounded) fine in textured leggings, a zip front, short-sleeved jacket and high heel boots all in black for her first performance. Innocuous, save for the chunky boulder around her neck but nothing to cry about.

As for the duet, Allison and Adam are the "A" team and make stellar singing partners. Allison rocked the look and the audience. Cutie pie met rocker chic in a tiny black sleeveless tunic, leggings and black combat boots perfect for stage stomping. Fab fashion and performance from her. We weren't that keen on Adam's striped, skintight jester pants, but he sure sounded great.

Sadly, Kris Allen pretty much bombed, though not in the fashion department. This guy, with his clean cut sweet face, is pure teen idol material and looked the part, particularly in his solo where he wore a dark plum colored shirt topped by an army green fatigue jacket with rolled sleeves and epaulettes. In fairness, this is his not his genre but, though he plays a mean guitar, it definitely did not come together.

For the duet, he wore a black tee embellished with a red cross, black leather jacket and football shaped necklace – nice. And despite what Simon said, we thought his performance was decent here.

Sad to say, although we are Danny Gokey fans, Gokey went hokey in his pinstriped vest, purple shirt and wool trousers. It seemed dated and out of sync with the musical category, and his performance, once again, out of his comfort zone by a long shot, seemed just as awkward – like in that cover your eyes, embarrassing way.
