Nicole Kidman Biography

Name: Nicole Kidman
Born: 20 June 1967 (Age: 44)
Where: Honolulu, Hawaii, USA
Height: 5' 10"
Awards: 1 Oscar, 1 BAFTA & 3 Golden Globes

Biography:
It's a mark of Australia's cultural strength that they've provided so many of today's top-line cinematic greats. Aside from the obvious Mel Gibson and Cate Blanchett, there's also the less well-known yet hugely talented likes of Judy Davis and Naomi Watts as well as a couple of New Zealanders who made it in Aussie productions. Step forward, Sam Neill and Russell Crowe. And, of course, there's the woman who, Gibson aside, is the hottest of the lot, the ex-Mrs Cruise but a fine actress and Oscar-winner in her own right - Nicole Kidman.

Strangely, given what most people know of her, Nicole is not a fair dinkum Aussie at all, actually being born on Honolulu, Hawaii (on the 20th of June, 1967), and holding dual US and Australian citizenship. Her father, Anthony, a biochemist and clinical psychologist, had moved to the island with his wife Janelle to work on a research project. Almost as soon as Nicole appeared (she'd be closely followed by sister, Antonia), Anthony's work with breast cancer took the family to Washington DC for three years. It was only then that the girl who would be known as one of Australia's prime exports began life on Antipodean soil, when the Kidmans moved back to the posh Longueville district of Sydney (coincidentally, one of Nicole's most renowned relatives was also named Sydney - he was a cattle baron).

Nicole was an active, artistic child, and focused from an absurdly young age. She began taking ballet lessons at 3, moving onto mime at 8 and drama at 10. Her first public role was at 6, as a loud sheep in her elementary school's Christmas pageant. She grew up fast. Janelle was an active feminist and Anthony a labour advocate, both of them discussing the issues of the day with their kids over dinner and having them hand out pamphlets on the street.

When it came to acting, Nicole possessed the same intensity as her future husband. She was always seen as an outsider - she was known as Storky due to her peculiar height (she fast reached a whopping 5' 11") - and, as she approached her teens she departed even further from her peers. While the other girls were down the beach, eyeing up the boys, Nicole spent her weekends at the Philip Street Theatre, watching, learning. She had her sights set on higher things - as you'd expect from someone whose influences include Jane Fonda, Vanessa Redgrave and, above all, Katherine Hepburn - and, indeed, she had her first kiss onstage in Frank Wedekind's Spring Awakening. As the play concerned sexual repression in the late 1800's, it was something of a wild one too, Nicole having to yell "Beat me! Harder! Harder!" each night. More impressive than a clumsy fumble under the pier, eh?

53rd Annual Grammy Awards Red Carpet Report

And so, the surprises and glitzy performances of the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards aside, we take a look at the dresses and creations the various singers and celebrities wore on the red carpet. Some dazzled, others looked frazzled and some were simply walking disasters, we take a look at some of the best and some of the worst dressed at the Red Carpet.

Miley Cyrus looked trendy and stylish with big bangles, a sequined Roberto Cavalli dress and a mane of honey-blonde hair. Jennifer Lopez was at her gorgeous best in a Pucci dress and Christian Louboutin heels. In a daring Jean Paul Gaultier gown, Rihanna was looking sexy and stylish while Selma Blair was elegant in a minimalistic maternity dress.

Jennifer Hudson looked elegantly fashionable in a Versace frock while Nicole Kidman in her floral strapless Jean Paul Gaultier mermaid gown was perhaps the best dressed lady of the night. Heidi Klum set an example to others on how to dress well in a luxurious Julien MacDonald creation while Julienne Hough in a colorful Catherine Malandrino maxi dress and a loose coiffure was elegance itself.

Justin Bieber in a rather ill fitting baggy looking cream-colored Gucci suit and a pair of sneakers was not very impressive. Lady Gaga on the other hand an impressive entrance and that was the best to be had from the Grammy award winning singer.

Haylee Williams was, in the opinion of most critics, simply the worst dressed of the lot in a Jeremy Scott frock and red hair, at best she reminded us of Lola Luftnagle from Hannah Montana but we certainly hope she changes her stylist or hires one if she does not already have one as soon as possible.

Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber not a couple

Beauty & Style
According to Selena Gomez herself, she was just having pancakes with Justin Bieber at the iHop restaurant where they were spotted. "Who doesn't like pancakes?" asks the teenage singer and actor who stars as Alex in the Disney channel series Wizards of Waverly Place.

At the Jingle Ball event hosted by radio station Z100, Selena Gomez told MTV news, "We were both performing in the same place so we went and had pancakes together. That's all it is. All innocent."

While this might, in part, be to safeguard herself from death threats like the one received by reality TV star Kim Kardashian after she posed with Justin Bieber for Elle magazine in the summer, we rather think that that is all there is to it.

Justin Bieber, just 16 years old is constantly in the media spotlight and usually has scores of female fans following him about. He is set to make his acting debut in the film "Never Say Never", which is about his life, and it hits theaters sometime in February 2011.

Selena Gomez, who has been labeled the next Miley Cyrus (a.k.a Hannah Montana) by some, has also made her film debut and starred in Ramona and Beezus, which was released earlier this year.

In 2011, she is set to feature in a film called Monte Carlo that will also feature Gossip Girl Leighton Meester and Katie Cassidy, which is produced by Nicole Kidman, Denise Di Novi and Alison Greenspan.

Nicole Kidman:Hollywood has probably contributed to violence against women

Nicole Kidman conceded Wednesday that Hollywood has probably contributed to violence against women by portraying them as weak sex objects.
The Oscar-winning actress said she is not interested in those kinds of demeaning roles, adding that the movie industry also has made an effort to contribute to solutions for ending the violence.
Kidman testified before a House Foreign Affairs subcommittee that is considering legislation to address violence against women overseas through humanitarian relief efforts and grants to local organizations working on the problem.
Asked by Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif., if the movie industry has "played a bad role," Kidman said "probably," but quickly added that she herself doesn't.
"I can't be responsible for all of Hollywood but I can certainly be responsible for my own career," she said.
Kidman appeared before the committee in her role as a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. Development Fund for Women, known as UNIFEM, to promote the International Violence Against Women Act.
"In the real world, the laws go unenforced and impunity is the norm," she said.
The legislation has stalled in the past, but a sponsor, Rep. Bill Delahunt, D-Mass., said he and others plan to reintroduce it soon.
The Australian star told Congress that the U.N. women's fund needs more resources. "We need the money," she said.
Before the hearing began, a crowd of people lined the hall and around the corner to hear her speak.From:money.aol.com
